X-Pac® vs Cordura – which material to choose?

If you're looking for a bikepacking bag, sooner or later you'll come across two materials. X-Pac® and Cordura.

Both are tried and tested. Both used by good brands. But they perform a little differently.

And that's what makes the difference when you start really using your bag.

What are X-Pac® and Cordura?

X-Pac® is a technical laminate developed by Dimension-Polyant. It consists of several layers bonded together into a single structure. This makes it stable, lightweight, and low in water absorption.

Cordura is a classic nylon fabric with high abrasion resistance. It is softer and more flexible. It has been used in outdoor gear for years and still does its job.

In our bags, we use original, certified Cordura 500D fabrics, which have consistent quality and proven durability.

Stability and shape retention

X-Pac® holds its shape. It does not stretch or change its form under load.

Cordura is more flexible. It can conform slightly to what you put inside.

In frame bags, this matters. A stiffer material provides a better fit and the bag simply stays in place.

Contact with water

X-Pac® limits moisture penetration through the material itself.

Cordura behaves more like a classic fabric. It can absorb water and become heavier over time.

However, one thing needs to be stated clearly. Every bag is sewn. And sewing means seams.

At the seams, there are always micro-holes from the needle. If they are not sealed, that's where water can get inside.

Therefore, we distinguish between two things: material properties and product construction.

Durability

Both materials are durable and perfectly suitable for heavy-duty use.

Cordura has been known for its abrasion resistance for years and is still a very solid choice.

X-Pac®, thanks to its construction, also withstands intensive use well and additionally maintains its properties over time.

Weight

X-Pac® is lighter with similar durability.

This is one reason why it works so well in bikepacking, where every gram starts to matter.

Appearance

X-Pac® has a distinctive grid pattern and a more technical look.

Cordura is visually calmer and more classic.

For some, it's a detail. For others, it's what makes the whole bag.

When to choose X-Pac®?

X-Pac® will be a good choice if you prioritize a stable shape, lower material water absorption, and lightweight construction.

It's a material that works well in custom-fit frame bags.

When to choose Cordura?

Cordura will work well if you prefer a softer construction and a material that has some give.

It is still a very good and proven choice.

How do we use these materials at Stical?

In our bags, we most often use X-Pac® because it allows for great control over the shape and works well in frame-fitted designs.

At the same time, we also use Cordura 500D, especially where greater flexibility or a different material performance is needed.

We often combine both materials in one bag. We use their properties where they make sense, but not only there.

In practice, X-Pac® and Cordura have quite similar applications, but they give a completely different visual effect. And sometimes that's what matters. It's not always just about parameters. Sometimes it's about how the bag looks and what character it has.
